Why SafeAs Works
SafeAs focuses on young newly licensed drivers and learners aged fifteen to eighteen and their parents/carers. SafeAs hope to make young people aware of how easily road trauma occurs and give them strategies on how they (and their parents) can avoid having a road crash or being involved in one.
SafeAs also offers tailored presentations and seminars for a wide variety of audiences ranging from corporate to various other demographic targets. SafeAs is usually approached and funded to make a presentation. The seminars are free to all attendees and lucky door prizes and other handouts are provided to encourage participation and provide extra information. On average an attendance of 150 to each seminar is reached. This comprises approximately 30% parents and 70% young or potential drivers aged 15 to 18. The seminars run for about two hours and we show video material obtained from the TAC in Victoria and the Road Ready Program in the ACT. There are speakers from emergency services including Police Highway Patrol officers, Trauma physicians and other emergency services as and when they are available. In recent times we have had John Cadogan, Features Editor Wheels magazine presenting. John has been extremely well received by the audiences. We also attempt to have at least one speaker who has been involved in a road crash and at most seminars we have a prominent Para-Olympian relate their experience of being badly injured. These are outstanding speakers who really do get the attention of the audience and the young people relate to the consequences that they see first hand. |
